Carlo Vandecasteele (University of Leuven - Belgium)
Professor Carlo Vandecasteele is professor emeritus at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Leuven (Belgium), where he was a full professor of environmental technology for almost 25 years. He headed the division 'Environmental Technology' (now: Process Technology for Sustainable Systems) for 15 years; was program director of the masters 'Chemical Technology' and 'Environmental science and technology' and headed the Departement of Chemical Engineering for 3 years.
Prior to this he was researcher (finally with the grade of research director) of the National Fund of Scientific research, active at the University of Ghent, Institute for Nuclear Sciences for 18 years. He holds a Ph.D. and an 'aggregaat hoger onderwijs' (Dr. Sc., habilitation) from the University of Gent, Belgium. Carlo has special research and teaching interests in waste management, treatment and recycling; environmental impact assessment of industrial production processes, sites and regions; industry and sustainability. Earlier research concerned membrane processes.
He is also active in development cooperation (Vietnam, Bolivia, Cuba, and so). He authored and coauthored several books, and more than 300 peer-reviewed journal papers. Carlo is president of the International Society for the Environmental and Technical Implications of Construction with Alternative Materials (ISCOWA), member of ISWA, board member of WWF (Belgium) and member of the SRI Advisory board of KBC Asset management. He is a member of the scientific committee for the ISWA 2015 world conference.
